Tornai Aranyhegy Juhfark 2023

$72.00

Kpo says: 15.5% alcohol, salted kumquat and popcorn — Kpo says this sheep’s tail has gone completely bonkers!

Grapes: Juhfark

Aranyhegy Juhfark represents a more profound and terroir-driven expression of Somló’s signature grape, produced from carefully selected fruit grown in the Aranyhegy vineyard on the volcanic slopes of Somló.

Low yields and rigorous selection give the wine remarkable concentration, while barrel maturation adds texture and complexity to Juhfark’s naturally firm structure. Rather than masking the character of the vineyard, the oak works alongside Somló’s distinctive mineral personality, creating a wine of considerable depth and ageing potential.

Rich and complex on the nose, with ripe pear, orchard fruit and honeyed notes layered with rocky minerality and refined barrel spice. The palate is concentrated and creamy yet energetic, combining ripe fruit with firm acidity, pronounced mineral character and subtle oak. Vanilla and savoury notes emerge toward a remarkably long, persistent finish.

A serious single-vineyard Juhfark that captures both the power of Somló and the distinctive personality of Aranyhegy — concentrated, mineral, complex and built to evolve beautifully in bottle.
100% Hungarian oak barrel matured for approximately 10 months, mix of new and used.

Producer

Tornai -Founded by Endre Tornai in 1946, Tornai is the oldest continuously operating family winery on Somló and one of the defining estates of this remarkable volcanic wine region.

Beginning with less than one hectare, the family estate has grown to around 70 hectares across some of Somló’s most important vineyard sites, including Grófi, Aranyhegy, Szent Ilona and Apátsági. Today, successive generations of the Tornai family continue to combine tradition with modern, precise winemaking.

Tornai has played an important role in preserving and revitalising Somló’s indigenous grape varieties, particularly Juhfark, alongside Furmint and Hárslevelű. These varieties thrive on the mountain’s ancient volcanic soils, producing distinctive wines renowned for their vibrant acidity, pronounced minerality and remarkable ageing potential.

From fresh, fruit-driven estate wines to complex single-vineyard bottlings, Tornai offers a fascinating exploration of one of Hungary’s smallest and most distinctive wine regions — wines shaped unmistakably by the volcanic character of Somló.
